In this flex course, learners will practise reading out loud through a different theme each week. Learners will discover a different aspect of the spoken word before putting it together in their own spoken piece. ESL friendly. Spoken Word is an umbrella term that includes poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry and hip hop. Spoken Word differs from written poetry because of its emphasis on the rhythmic way words sound. It is a broad designation for poetry intended for performance. Though some spoken word poetry may also be published on the page, the genre has its roots in oral traditions and performance. Spoken word can encompass or contain elements of rap, hip-hop, storytelling, theater, and jazz, rock, blues, and folk music. Each week will look at a different piece of writing and learners will be encouraged to discover it for themselves by putting their own stamp on it. Each week focuses on a different poem, story, rap or similar. Learners will explore how to bring it to life and perform it in their own way. Learners are encouraged to prepare for each class by reading through the poem, understanding the meaning and getting ready to present in class. Learners are also encouraged to share a recording of themselves presenting the poem after each class in the classroom for the teacher and other learners to comment on.
